The Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio (ULGSO) is calling for nominations for the prestigious 2020 Glorifying the Lions Award.  The award pays tribute to senior community leaders who have worked to make the community a better place to live.

The award’s title is derived from an old proverb of the Ibo people of Nigeria: “Until lions have their own historians, tales of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”  The message is that no telling of history is complete until both sides are told. Among the first awardees were: Theodore Berry Sr., Esq., the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Marian Spencer, Dolores Lindsay, Joseph A. Hall, the Rev. L.V. Booth, Raymond Brokamp, Emily Spicer and Marjorie Parham.

The Urban League’s 71st annual luncheon is Friday, Feb7, 2020, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 151 West Fifth St., downtown.  All nominations must be received by 4 p.m. Thursday, November 14. Email nominations to asimmons@ulgso.org or mail/deliver to 3458 Reading Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45239

Glorifying the Lions award criteria

  1. Age 65 or older.
  2. Citizens who have demonstrated a commitment to serving families and children in the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio community.  These individuals may be lesser known than the “usual achievers” who readily come to mind.  Their contributions, however, are no less important to our community. Your nominee could be your next-door neighbor, church member or former classmate.  Whoever they are, they have made a difference in the lives of individuals and families in our communities.
  3. Distinguished leaders who have changed the face of Southwestern Ohio by their words, actions and deeds.
