So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Mia Michaels, two Company dancers push boundaries with innovative pieces
CINCINNATI (August 20, 2018) – The Kaplan New Works Series puts the raw energy of contemporary ballet center stage with four world premieres September 13-23 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. This year’s bold program celebrates the athleticism, strength and versatility of the Company’s dancers. The 2018-2019 season opens with inventive works guaranteed to challenge the art form and the audience.
Emmy-award winning choreographer Mia Michaels from the popular FOX show, So You Think You Can Dance, brings her emotional piece, “calling you.” San Francisco Ballet soloist Myles Thatcher and Cincinnati Ballet Resident Choreographer Jennifer Archibald will join Michaels with premiere works. Archibald will focus on the strength of the male dancer with a new ballet for five powerhouse men.
Rounding out the Kaplan New Works Series will be two premieres choreographed by Company dancers David Morse and Taylor Carrasco. Morse’s “Gathering,” and Carrasco’s, “Plays Well Together,” were chosen from the Cincinnati Ballet’s annual Choreography Workshop.
“I am excited to highlight the talent of our dancers,” said Artistic Director Victoria Morgan. “It is an opportunity for us to develop that talent and to cultivate a fresh voice with tons of potential. I’ve been watching the choreography of several of our dancers for years and they are deserving. I’m really proud of them.”
Morse trained and performed with the Charlotte Ballet before joining the Cincinnati Ballet in 2014. He was promoted to Soloist in 2017. His award-winning choreography has been performed around the U.S. by professional companies, pre-professional schools and universities, and his work has been presented at Regional Dance America’s South Eastern Regional Ballet Association for six years.
Carrasco trained with the New Mexico Ballet Company and School of American Ballet. He joined Cincinnati Ballet Second Company in 2015 and was promoted to Corps de Ballet in 2017.
