The American Red Cross is preparing to help tens of thousands of people in the path of Hurricane Dorian as the extremely dangerous storm tracks towards the southeast coast of the U.S. We are mobilizing over 1,600 trained volunteers from all over the country, with at least 32 volunteers coming from the Cincinnati-Dayton Region. We expect additional volunteers from our region to head to the impacted area following Dorian’s landfall.
Earlier today, two Emergency Response Vehicles from Cincinnati and one from Dayton, left for Mobile, Alabama where they will be prepositioned in advance of the storm. Once Dorian passes through, the vehicles will be able to respond quickly to the area of the coast most needing help. Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) are used for mobile feeding or the distribution of emergency supplies. The ERVs from the Cincinnati-Dayton Region are among 110 such vehicles heading to the coast. The Red Cross is also sending 99 tractor-trailer loads full of relief supplies, including cots, blankets and 63,000 ready-to-eat meals.
The Red Cross is coordinating with partners to support evacuation centers, as planning estimates indicate some 60,000 people in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina may need help. Sunday night, some 2,600 people stayed in 60 Red Cross and community evacuation shelters in Florida.
Financial donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this disaster. This includes providing food, shelter, relief supplies, emotional support, recovery planning and other assistance.
