John Marshall, the son of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, went on stage to congratulate Judge Nathaniel Jones of Cincinnati, who was the recipient of the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal (the Civil Rights organization’s highest honor) presented to Jones at the NAACP Convention in Cincinnati in 2016. Jones was at the NAACP Convention in Cincinnati in 1946 when Thurgood Marshall received the Spingarn Medal. Marshall then was NAACP general counsel, whom Jones succeeded. The medal was presented by NAACP Vice President Leon Russell. U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx was also on stage. Foxx served as a legal aide to Jones.
