The back-to-school season is in full swing at CPS and this can be a stressful time for a lot of families. To help, the CPS team has developed a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and answers to help families, students and staff prepare for the 2022-2023 school year that began Aug. 18.
While the FAQs listed below may not include every question, our Customer Care Center is available to assist. Please call (513) 363-0123 for any additional questions. Q – When does school start?
A – CPS schools start on Thursday, August 18 for all students.

Q – What supplies does my child need for school?
A – Each CPS school has its own school supply list. You can find your school’s supply list by visiting your school’s website or calling your school. To find the school website click on the “Schools” button at the top of the page and select your student’s school.
Q – Will my student be in need of a uniform?

Q – Will my student receive free meals at school?
A – Breakfast will continue to be free for all students at all schools. Lunch will continue to be free for all students at most CPS schools. At nine schools, parents and guardians must fill out an application on our website to qualify for free lunch. Q – What bus is my student taking this year?
A – During the 2022-2023 school year, students in grades K-8 will take yellow bus. Students in grades 9-12 will take Metro. Students in grades 7-8 that participate in afterschool activities will receive a Metro pass from their school for after-school transportation.
Q – Which students will be using the yellow bus for school transportation?
A – CPS has expanded our yellow bus service to now provide transportation during school hours to all eligible students in grades K-8. 7th and 8th-graders who are participating in after-school activities may receive a Metro pass from their school for after-school transportation.
Q – Will students in 9-12th-graders receive transportation?
A – All 9-12th-grade CPS students will be using Metro services for school transportation. Students will be receiving a postcard showing their pick-up and drop-off locations. This routing card will also be the students’ bus pass on the first day of school.
Q – Are there any forms I need to complete before school starts?
A – To access your back-to-school forms on SchoolMint, visit http://register.cps-k12.org/login and search for your child with their PowerSchool ID number, first and last name, and date of birth. All back-to-school enrollment forms are available in paper form online at cps-k12.org/forms or from your school.
Q – Will my student be receiving an electronic device for school?
A – All students in CPS are entrusted with a device to use for the school year. The device remains the property of CPS and must be returned whenever the student leaves our district.
- Students in PreK – grade 1 receive an iPad (Montessori grade 1 students will instead receive laptops)
- Students in grades 2 – 12 receive a laptop
- Students who attended CPS last school year were already given a device and should bring it to school with them every day.
Students new to CPS this year will receive their devices at their school sometime between Aug 15 – Aug 19.
