Ask Ashlee – Finding yourself after raising children

Dear Ask Ashlee,

I am a 51-year-old single mom of two grown young men who have officially left the nest and started their own lives. I am so proud of them and what journeys they are embarking on in their lives. However, now I find myself completely lost, and I don’t know what to do to find myself again. I take pride in doing my absolute best in raising them and keeping them safe, but in the process of that, I forgot who I was, and it has been a struggle finding me again and reconnecting with who I used to be.

Lone Nester

Dear Lone Nester,

So, here’s the thing, maybe you are struggling so much because you keep trying to reconnect with a version of yourself that is no longer there. As your boys grew and evolved into young men, you too have grown and become a new woman. Instead of focusing on what you feel like you lost, turn your sights to what you have gained. The woman you are today is not the woman who gave birth to those baby boys many moons again. Embrace the woman you are today and keep your mindset focused on her and what she likes. Ask yourself those questions, what do I like? What don’t I like? What is an experience I have wanted to try out that I can do today? What is something new I have wanted to learn and now I have the time to do that? Get acquainted with the woman in the mirror you see every day, because the one you are looking for is gone sis. I hope this helps.

Love and Light,
