The Tribute to Courtis J. Fuller Holiday Musical Concert, produced by Friends of the Cincinnati Herald under the visionary leadership of Robert L. Humphries and Co-Produced by Sharen Sierra King, was an unforgettable celebration of one of Cincinnati’s most beloved figures. Held at House of Joy Ministries, whose servant leader graciously hosted the event, it brought together community leaders, business leaders, and loyal viewers who have followed Fuller’s illustrious career for over 40 years. The evening was a testament to the city’s love and admiration for its adopted son, Courtis Fuller.
Courtis Fuller, Cincinnati’s favorite adopted son, was visibly moved by the outpouring of love and admiration. Humbled by the recognition, Fuller expressed his gratitude to the community for their unwavering support throughout his career. One of the highlights of the evening was a proclamation presented by Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney, bestowing upon Fuller the honor of having October 21, 2024, officially declared as Courtis J. Fuller Day. Joining the Vice Mayor on stage was Senator Eric Kearney—President and CEO of the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky African American Chamber.

Fuller acknowledged two new inductees into the Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame, Dr. Cleaster Mims and Susan Upton Farley posthumously.
Curtis is mindful to acknowledge those who paved the way for himself and others, such as 85-year-old Betty Daniel’s Rosemond, a renowned Freedom Rider, and civil rights activist. These acknowledgments further highlighted the enduring legacies of those who paved the way for others, adding depth to our obligations.
The concert was a packed house, brimming with energy and excitement. Emcees P. Ann Everson-Price and Lincoln Ware brought their charm and wit to the stage, sharing heartfelt stories and humorous memories of their time with Fuller. Their anecdotes had the audience laughing and reminiscing about the joy Fuller brought to Cincinnati.
Donald Sherman served as Creative and Stage Director, renowned for his work with the Cincinnati Black Theatre Company and RLH Pageants Unlimited. He brought his exceptional talent and crew to ensure the event’s success. The efforts were worth the wait, resulting in a memorable evening of music, laughter, and heartfelt tributes.

The Cincinnati Section of the National Council of Negro Women, members of The Links, the Urban Guild, NAACP and other organizations dedicated to empowering and uplifting the African American community were present, demonstrating the collective support for the legacy and those of us who believe in equality.
The entertainment for the evening was nothing short of extraordinary. The performances included songs handpicked by Fuller himself, which deeply resonated with him and brought tears of joy to his eyes. Teresa Terri delivered a soul-stirring performance of “I Got A Crush On You,” which she wrote. David Minor and the Cincinnati United Choir lifted the roof with their powerful rendition of “We Offer Praise.” The musical selections, coupled with the exceptional talent of the performers, created an atmosphere of celebration and reverence. Additional performers included Angela Alexander, Melvin Broach, LaVieena Campbell, Bonita Carlisle, Aretha Chapman, Bridgett Schooler Davis, David Fowler, Terry Gibson, Lady Joya, Kim Kinamore, Mike Langford, Lynne Moon, Bishop Todd O’Neal, Vince Stroud, Ed “Sax” Thomas, Mike Wade, and 2024 Miss Black Cincinnati Ajiana Birchmore and 2024 Miss Black Teen Cincinnati Jai-Walker Tate.

Fuller also took a moment to praise the work and writings of poet and educator Nikki Giovanni, whose body was laid to rest at Cincinnati’s Spring Grove Cemetery two days before the tribute. Her legacy continues to inspire generations. Giovanni’s impactful poem, “I am Cincinnati,” was incorporated into the program book, as Fuller requested. The poem captures the spirit of a young Black woman reflecting on her life in the city she calls home and resonates deeply with the community’s shared experiences.
