President Joe Biden plans to deliver the commencement address at Morehouse College on May 19, a significant event as he seeks to strengthen ties with the diverse coalition that played a pivotal role in his election to the White House.

The White House confirmed Bidenโ€™s participation on Tuesday, following his planned address to the United States Military Academy at West Point on May 25. The Morehouse address marks the second consecutive year Biden will address the graduating class of a prominent historically Black institution, having spoken at Howard University in 2023.

Morehouse College is renowned for its storied history and legacy of nurturing influential Black leaders, including civil rights luminary Martin Luther King Jr. and Georgiaโ€™s first Black U.S. Senator, Sen. Raphael Warnock. It is considered a beacon of empowerment and academic excellence.

Warnock, a Morehouse alum, said he was excited about the presidentโ€™s planned address. โ€œI am thrilled to see President Biden return to our great state to deliver this yearโ€™s commencement address,โ€ Warnock stated. โ€œHis administrationโ€™s commitment to addressing the soaring costs of higher education and initiatives like canceling debt for over 4 million Americans have been pivotal in narrowing the racial wealth gap.โ€

President of Morehouse College, David Thomas, also expressed excitement for Bidenโ€™s participation in the commencement ceremony, stating, โ€œWe are deeply honored that President Biden has accepted our invitation,โ€ Thomas insisted. โ€œHis presence is a testament to our institutionโ€™s enduring legacy and our unwavering commitment to excellence, progress, and positive transformation.โ€

Henry Goodgame, a Morehouse alumnus and vice president of external relations & alumni engagement, said Bidenโ€™s address comes during a pivotal moment for America. โ€œWe have invited the leader of the free world to address our community, tackling pressing issues and inspiring our next generation of leaders,โ€ Goodgame commented.

Mekhi Perrin, president of the Student Government Association at Morehouse, highlighted the collegeโ€™s rich tradition of hosting influential figures and shared the studentsโ€™ aspirations for the future. โ€œWe seek an equitable society that upholds the dignity and respect of all individuals, irrespective of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sex, identity, socioeconomic status, or background,โ€ Perrin articulated.

Meanwhile, White House officials said Bidenโ€™s address at Morehouse College reaffirms his administrationโ€™s commitment to addressing racial disparities and advancing educational opportunities for all Americans.
