He showed so many flashes of it last year in his rookie season that you were left wanting more. Last season Chase Brown played behind starter Joe Mixon. He ultimately finished with 179 yards on 44 carries. This season Brown plays behind newly acquired starter Zac Moss who was acquired from Indianapolis Colts.
Zac Moss is a capable running back. Nobody is saying the Bengals were wrong for going after the former Colt. But Chase Brown has shown flashes of being a star. Thus far this season Brown has rushed for 184 yards on 29 carries. He is averaging an amazing 6.3 yards per carry. The only knock on Brown is that he is a little smaller than backs that have played in front of him at 209 pounds. The size of NFL running backs average 220 pounds. The way Brown hits the hole and takes off reminds you of past Bengals greats such as James Brooks and Rudi Johnson. Itโs only a matter of time before the former Illinois star gets more time and has more opportunities to show what he can do.
The days of a running back getting 30-40 carries are pretty much over. Offenses have changed and running has become secondary to passing. Emmitt Smithโs rushing record may be safe for years to come. Most teams have dual threats at running back to carry the load.
The Bengals have gotten off to a less than desirable start. Cincy is now 1-3 after finally winning their first game this past weekend against the Carolina Panthers 34-24. Brown aided largely in the victory as he rushed for 80 yards.
Cincinnati is now in a deep hole. They are in early must win situations if the team plans on getting to the playoffs and competing for a Super Bowl. Brown has shown he has explosive ability and can be a major difference in the Bengal running game. The team has Baltimore, New York, and Cleveland coming in their next few games. The ability to run will play a large role if the Cincy is to win any or all.
We are at a point in the United States where the country is in election time. If the Bengals are going to get back in the race the team may want to elect Chase Brown as their top back to get more touches. His speed and explosiveness can only help.ย ย
