Zachary Pettus Provided

By Tina Jackson, Huntington Beach, CA

A Spotfund has been opened by Tina Jackson, a family friend of imprisoned Cincinnati native Zachary Pettus, for a non-profit organization in Long Beach, California, named Unite the People Inc., which has agreed to prepare and file with the Federal Courts a writ of habeas corpus, based on the 2023 California Racial Justice Act, Law AB 256, which provides equal justice for individuals that have allegedly been harmed by the racial bias and discrimination that permeates our criminal justice system.

Pettus Zachary is from Cincinnati. He came out to Huntington Beach, California, in the spring of 1983 to stay with his sister Veronica Ingram.  He enrolled in Marina High School to earn the last few credits for his high school diploma while staying with his sister. He was 18 years old.

Everything went wrong for Pettus when he decided in September of 1983 that California was not for him and decided to return home to Cincinnati, but he did not want to call home and ask his parents for money to return home. He also wanted to help his sister Veronica before he returned home. He had only been in California for 5-6 months at this point. On September 17, 1983, he went to look for a job to earn money, visiting several businesses in the area and put in several applications.

According to Jackson, the last business Pettus went to was the business, Somewhere in Time, owned by Darlene Hazboun. Somewhere in Time was in a small strip mall on the second floor that included several small businesses. He  was there for over 20 minutes. talking to the owner and a couple of customers in  the store. Zac had been to this establishment once before, a couple of weeks earlier to inquire about purchasing a Zoot suit for a Halloween party he and his nephew was going to. He was told to keep coming back since the store gets new shipments daily. A day later, an employee had found Hazboun’s body, hogtied, gagged and stabbed to death in the area customers used to try on clothes.

They arrested Pettus without incident.

Unite the People Inc., will also make inquiries to the California Governors Office about clemency and pardon applications that have been submitted over 4 years ago. In short, the organization will act as Zachary’s attorney’s in the courts and with elected officials. This organization is charging a much lower fee than a private attorney, which would cost in the range of $25,000 to $30,000, if not more to do the same services on behalf of Pettus, a family member said.

The family is asking for donations to reach their  goals to pay the fee to retain the services of Unite the People Inc. on behalf of Pettus.

“Zachary has been paying the price for a crime he did not commit,” fa family member said. “Please help us find justice for this innocent man, any amount will do. No donation is too small. Please donate and share this with your friends.”
