Pen display tablets are a favorite tool of mine to create cartoons and comics.
As an artist I first learned how to draw using pencil and paper. To speed up my workflow I shifted to sketching, inking and coloring using a pen display tablet.
These devices have a built-in screen. Draw or paint directly on the screen using a pen stylus combined with a graphics program.
First connect it to a computer with USB (Universal serial bus) cord. Install the manufactures driver software to change settings and calibrate pen pressure. The tablet can mirror content on the computer screen or function as a second monitor.
Hobbyists, content creators and professional artists can benefit from a more intuitive experience. They’re available in multiple screen sizes and configurations.
Who is Xencelabs?
Xencelabs pronounced (‘sense’ labs) is a global company that provides best-in-class digital drawing tools to support artistic excellence. Founded in 2019, the brand name, Xencelabs, stems from two ideas. One being “Xence”, the human senses and creativity; and the other “Labs”, a place for innovation and experimentation. The “Element” logo is a dynamic shape that brings energy and focus. It is in constant motion, evolving and seeking change.

Pen Display 16
The Xencelabs Pen Display 16 Bundle is for creative professionals on the go. The tablet is light weight with a slim profile to fit in most backpacks. The screen uses Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology. Each pixel emits its own light, eliminating the need for a backlight. Allowing for bold colors to display on the screen. The OLED in the Pen Display 16 has built-in pixel refresh routines.
Edge to edge glass enables the artists hand to glide across the screen. The glass has the feel of textured paper. Aluminum back housing ensures rapid heat dissipation without fans.
Creative Accessories
The bundle is packed with tools and accessories. Dual pens, carrying case, hub, drawing glove, mobile easel, quick keys remote and much more. Wear the drawing glove as it fits most hand sizes and prevents smudging the screen.
Quick Keys remote is a time saver. Assign keyboard shortcuts using the settings menu. When creating digital art, I save my favorite digital tools and brushes for quick selections.
The Hub
While the tablet can connect to computers with a single USB connection this may not provide enough power to the tablet. Unlike Apple, windows devices are made from multiple brands and manufacturers. Leading to different power specifications. The hub connects power from a wall outlet to the tablet to provide an extra boost in power.

Customer service
Xencelabs works with most digital arts programs such as Adobe Creative Suite, Corel, Affinity Designer, Clip Studio Paint and more. Customers can schedule video chats for training, service and questions. Xencelabs wants customers to feel comfortable and confident. User suggestions are welcomed, and feedback is shared with the product team.
Interview with Hannah Imperial Cannon
Hannah Imperial Cannon, Sr. Director of Global Partner Relations & Business Development at Xencelabs Technologies Ltd.
What is your favorite part about working at Xencelabs?
“My favorite part of working at Xencelabs is being part of the artist community. As a team, we spend many hours working, listening, and understanding the passion that drives artists. We share many of the same industry pain points as our users. Whether it’s exploring new technologies, workflow innovations, or understanding which design styles are gaining popularity, I genuinely enjoy seeing the work and discovering the unique perspectives of each artist, studio, or school. It’s always insightful and exciting to hear about their wins and share in their achievements.”

Xencelabs has a strong presence in the digital arts community. Could you share some events you have participated in?
“Our team spends a lot of time participating in events for the design community. We usually go to the Game Developers Conference, NAB Show, Siggraph, Slice event Orlando, Museum of Comic and Cartoon Arts Festival, Society of Illustrators NYC, Lightbox Expo, Annecy and support the Visual Effects Society community. We also support many higher education schools with their technology days.”
What is a great reason for traditional artists to try a Pen Display Tablet?
“Some of the top reasons traditional artists choose to use a pen tablet or display are to work more smoothly with software applications. Digital platforms offer unique and smart workflows and tools for both 2D and 3D type art and design in illustration. Industrial model design, drawing, painting, motion design, animation, photographic editing, and compositing. Just like any traditional tool paintbrush, pencil, charcoal, or physical material to build or use in the physical sense. The Digital pen tablets and displays are simply tools to enhance or add another layer to the artist’s toolbox.”
That concludes the interview it was insightful and a pleasure. Cost of this model is around $1,249.00. Check the website for sales, promotions and incentives.

When is the last time I had a snow cone? I used to enjoy them at the state fair. That hawk pulling out Harrisa weave hair is a chuckle.
I had a good time with the strip
A diversity cartoon in a black owned published newspaper is true genius.
I get joy from watching the characters in a roller coaster. The weave hair being pulled out by a bird is wild! Keep this cartoon strip coming.
