The Riverwalk, a new four-mile cultural tourism experience connecting Cincinnati, Newport, and Covington riverfronts, was officially dedicated Monday morning at the Public Landing. The event marked the opening of Americaโ€™s River Roots Festival, which will run Oct. 8โ€“12 across both sides of the Ohio River.

The Riverwalk features 44 history stops, new signage, and a mobile app that offers self-guided tours, trivia, and treasure hunts. The dedication ceremony recognized the decades of planning and collaboration that brought the project to completion, dating back to its original vision in 1988.

Celebration of History and Innovation

Speakers at the ceremony highlighted the Riverwalkโ€™s connection to the regionโ€™s history and its role in unifying the riverfront communities. The project was developed as a joint effort among civic organizations, local governments, and community partners, creating a continuous pedestrian loop that links key historical and recreational sites.

Rick Greiwe of Americaโ€™s River Roots reflected on the long-term vision for the project, noting its origins nearly four decades ago. โ€œBack in 1988, when we had this idea of connecting the three cities, no one could imagine that someday there would be 44 history stops,โ€ Greiwe said. โ€œItโ€™s gone from 25 to 44, all unified with a common brand developed by Coal Art Design.โ€

The Riverwalkโ€™s app integrates digital storytelling with physical landmarks, offering a new way for residents, students, and tourists to explore the areaโ€™s cultural and industrial past. The interactive technology allows visitors to learn about the people, places, and events that have shaped the region, while promoting year-round engagement with the riverfront.

Community Collaboration and Design

The project is the result of partnerships between Americaโ€™s River Roots, Cincinnati Parks Foundation, Southbank Partners, and Horizon Community Funds. Together, these organizations coordinated efforts to align branding, improve accessibility, and install interpretive signage that highlights the regionโ€™s shared heritage.

Jennifer Spieser of the Cincinnati Parks Foundation emphasized the Riverwalkโ€™s contribution to accessibility and education. โ€œItโ€™s easier than ever to find your way and stay engaged, whether visiting or living locally,โ€ Spieser said. โ€œWith more than 100 points of interest along this riverfront district, our history is tied to this very landing and to the people who left their mark here.โ€ Spieser added that the interpretive signage and app help tell stories that might otherwise be forgotten. One exhibit includes information about Little Turtle, a Miami leader who fought for his land and people, representing the broader theme of human connection to the Ohio Riverโ€™s history.

A Permanent Cultural Asset

The dedication event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, group photos of civic leaders and donors, and app demonstration stations for visitors. Organizers emphasized that the Riverwalk represents not only a tourism enhancement but also a lasting cultural infrastructure investment.

The Riverwalk provides educational opportunities for local schools, expands recreational options for residents, and enhances tourism appeal for the region. It also serves as a key feature of Americaโ€™s River Rootsโ€™ broader mission to preserve and share riverfront history through community engagement and innovative storytelling.

Festival Connection

The dedication launched Americaโ€™s River Roots Festival, a five-day event featuring nine historic riverboats, more than 160 themed cruises, concerts, and educational exhibits. The festival spans both sides of the river, showcasing music, art, food, and performances that celebrate the Ohio Riverโ€™s influence on American culture.

Festival highlights include the Parade of Riverboats on Oct. 9, the Parade of Lights and Fireworks Cruise on Oct. 12, and a variety of interactive exhibits such as โ€œEcology of the Riverโ€ in Newport and โ€œSounds From the Riverโ€ at Yeatmanโ€™s Cove.
