The University of Cincinnati has accepted Anthony Carter’s voluntary resignation as UC’s Chief of Police effective November 23, according to Robin Engel, UC’s for Safety and Reform.

Carter will be moving into a new role within the University’s Institute of Crime Science (ICS), University officials said. Housed in the School of Criminal Justice, the ICS team combines the knowledge and skills of both academic researchers and criminal justice practitioners, like Carter, to solve real-world problems.

In the meantime, Lt. Col. Maris Herold has been appointed interim UC police chief.

Carter and Harold worked together on Cincinnati’s Collaborative Agreement that was set in motion following the civil unrest in Cincinnati in 2001 to improve police/community relations.

Carter worked at the Cincinnati Police Department for 23 years before retiring as a captain and moving to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

Carter was hired as UCPD’s chief in June 2016 following the tumultuous time at the University following the death of unarmed Black motorist Samuel DuBose who was fatally shot by UCPD officer Ray Tensing during a routine traffic stop several blocks from the campus. Tensing was charged with murder, but was not convicted in two subsequent trials. However, UC officials appointed a team of law enforcement officials to reform UCPD, resulting the resignation of the former police chief and the implementation of more than 200 reforms in how the campus and surrounding are is policed.

Carter said he is proud of UCPD’s growth and development during his time with the University, and that he has enjoyed working with UC students, faculty, and staff.
