King Legacy Awards Breakfast is at Freedom Center January 15
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and MLK Coalition will host the 2018 King Legacy Awards Breakfast on Monday, January 15. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. and the breakfast begins at 8 a.m. Tickets for the breakfast are $35 and seating is limited. To purchase tickets, call (513) 333-7706.
The annual breakfast and program is sponsored by Kroger, Xavier University, Western Southern Financial Group, UC Health, Union Savings Bank and Fifth Third Bank.
The museum opens to the public at 11 a.m. with free general admission.
The 2018 King Legacy Awards Breakfast program begins at 9 a.m. and will honor the participants of the King Legacy Youth Leadership Program. The King Legacy Youth Program provides leadership opportunities for graduates of the Youth Docent Program and scholarship funds upon completion of the program. The keynote speaker is The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati Artistic Director of Education and Outreach, Deondra Kamau Means.

Martin Luther King Day Jr. Day celebration returns to Music Hall
The Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition announces a series of events for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 15. This is the MLK Coalition’s 43rd annual celebration of the holiday in Cincinnati. The theme for the 2018 events is “If Not Now When?” The day is filled with opportunities for participation, commemoration and celebration. - 10:30 a.m. Commemorative Civil Rights March begins at the Freedom Center
- m. Fountain Square, Interfaith Prayer Service followed by march to Music Hall
- 11:30 a.m. Music Hall, MLK Commemorative Celebration
Beginning at 10:30, hundreds of people will gather outside the Freedom Center’s Harriet Tubman Theater. After brief remarks and prayers, marchers will proceed to Fountain Square for an interfaith prayer service. The march, which commemorates the Civil Rights marches led by Dr. King and many others, will proceed to Taft Theatre. Metro’s Rosa Parks Bus, dedicated to the spirit of Mrs. Parks, will participate in the march, providing limited seating for those unable to make the 1-mile walk from the Freedom Center to Music Hall. Many area religious leaders will participate during the march and later at Music Hall.
The Commemorative Celebration begins at noon at Music Hall. The 2018 keynote speaker is Dr. Littisha Bates, sociologist scholar. Several area youth choirs will provide an exciting addition to the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Chorale music program under the direction of Bishop Todd O’Neal and Steve Milloy.
Students to receive MLK Jr. Keep the Dream Alive award
Principals of Sole Bros Inc., a non-profit created by Greater Cincinnati youth in 2015 that has collected and shipped more than 3,000 pairs of sneakers to kids in need in Montego Bay and Kingston Jamaica, the Volta Region of
Ghana, Houston and Beaumont Texas, will be honorees at the 18th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Keep the Dream Alive award ceremony at 3 p.m. Monday, January 15, at Church of the Resurrection, 1619 California Avenue in Bond Hill. The speaker will be Hamilton County Judge Fanon Rucker.
`Spencer Boyd, one of the founders of Sole Bros and a sophomore at Seven Hills School, says “Dr. King’s commitment to improving the lives of others always called for action. We saw a problem and we made a plan. We did something about it. Sometimes faith needs hands and feet, and now one of our greatest desires is to inspire other youth.
UC Health, UC College of Medicine hold 45th annual King Day celebration January 12
UC Health and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine will host its 45th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Friday, January 12, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event is in Kresge Auditorium in the University of Cincinnati Medical Sciences Building, 231 Albert Sabin Way, Cincinnati, 45229.
The keynote speaker is Verna L. Williams, interim dean and Nippert Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati College of Law.
Each year, the organizations also recognize an individual who goes above and beyond in carrying on King’s legacy in the Greater Cincinnati community.
This year’s recipient of the Humanitarian Award is Kenneth Davis Jr., MD, a UC Health trauma surgeon and professor of surgery and clinical anesthesia at the UC College of Medicine.
UC Health employees John Bush and William Johnson will also be recognized for their commitment to the organization’s values, which include diversity. The event will celebrate diversity in healthcare, and UC Health recruiters will be present for those who wish to apply for open positions at UC Health.
Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Fanon Rucker will serve as emcee. Other participants include Pastor Ennis F. Tait of the Church of the Living God, The Rockdale Academy Choir, and Deuces Musik.
The event is free and open to members of the community.
