
“The Cincinnati Herald” won second place in criminal justice reporting in the 2018 Ohio Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) writing contest for print publications under 75,000 circulation. More than 15 articles plus numerous photos that covered the second trial of Ray Tensing in 2017 by reporters Liz Brazile, Vanessa Enoch, Ph.D., and Editor-in-Chief Dan Yount were presented for the contest.
Tensing, a former University of Cincinnati police officer was charged with the murder unarmed Black motorist Samuel DuBose during a routine traffic stop that became escalated, but juries in two trials failed to convict Tensing, who is White.
More than 645 entries from throughout Ohio were entered in the 2018 SJP contest.
