Bey & Associates, a nationwide, Black-owned personal injury firm whose office opened in Cincinnati last year, is exploring ways to serve the area’s diverse community
Although CEO John Bey founded Bey & Associates, LLC, in Atlanta, the roots of the firm lie in Cincinnati. Bey, who graduated the University of Cincinnati College of Law, and Tifanie Owens, managing attorney who graduated Walnut Hills High School, met as fellow aspiring lawyers in the Summer Work Experience in Law program (SWEL). Attorney Calvin Tregre, who has worked as a civil trial lawyer in Cincinnati for 20 years, met Bey and Owens as a SWEL board member and left his old firm to join them last summer.

“We wanted to be in Cincinnati and serve the community that has helped us throughout the years,” Bey said.
The team in Cincinnati has over 30 years of combined experience representing clients who have been injured or harmed. Bey, Owens and Tregre have been selected to Super Lawyer and Rising Star lists, and Bey and Tregre were named Top 100 Trial Lawyers by the National Trial Lawyers, among other accolades. The firm has hired young talent from Cincinnati, including Alex Freitag, associate attorney, who attended the UC College of Law.
Bey & Associates handles a wide variety of cases including car accidents, truck accidents, wrongful death, work injuries, nursing home abuse, product liability claims, including defective hernia mesh implants, medical malpractice and slip and fall accidents. The firm hopes to expand areas of defective pharmaceutical drugs or medical devices in Cincinnati, complex trials in which the firm’s lawyers have won large verdicts before. Bey says that because the firm is larger than others in the market, its attorneys handle complex cases from start to finish without shuffling them between partners.
As a Black-owned firm, Bey & Associates hopes to stand apart from other firms by initiating genuine relationships with people in the community.
“I think in terms of advertising, we’ve intentionally tried to stay away from the gimmick advertising or selling to our community in a way that doesn’t really address what’s really going on with them and the fact that they were injured, the fact that they need help, that they need someone,” Owens said.
Bey & Associates aims to support the community through partnerships with organizations, including the African American Chamber of Commerce, SWEL, Cincinnati Black Lawyers Association, It’s Commonly Jazz, and ones allied with social justice issues such as gun violence.
“I think it works because we’re all friends, and we all work very hard, and it doesn’t feel like work at times, because it is all one big family: us, the clients, the community,” Bey said.
Bey & Associates is at 312 Elm Street Suite 1485, Cincinnati, 45202. For more information, visit beyandassociates.com/cincinnati/ or call 513 276-4611.
