What made you start your business?
I have always been the beauty and fashion girl amongst my friends. You know, the one your girlfriends call to help pull their looks together or to do their makeup. I was blessed with the opportunity to work as the Brand & Marketing Manager for a major ethnic brand. It put me in front of so many women that looked like me and they were forever complementing my unique accessories and asking for my statement pieces. Years later, while working as a freelance makeup artist, many photographers that I worked with began asking me to handle the styling as far as the jewelry and accent pieces. Eventually, the lightbulb came on after being laid of 3 times in a 7-year period. I decided to bet on myself and launch Glamhoarder.com
How does it empower you as a Black Woman in the Beauty/Fashion Field?
It’s exciting, stressful but exciting to work for myself. The fact that it excites me more than it terrifies me lets me know that this choice is the best choice for me. Knowing that I can make my owns schedule, improve my quality of life and increase the time spent with my family is empowering. It’s also very empowering for me to be able to encourage women to to step out of their comfort zone and express themselves with their own personal style. It makes me feel good that a little part of me can be a part of the days they feel and look their best.
What are 3 of your favorite beauty items you can’t live without?
Now you know I am a true Glam Hoarder, so I have a love of them all. But since you’re forcing my hand, I would say a deep brown brow pencil. Most recently I’ve been into Maybelline’s Ultra Slim Pencil. Number two would be Julia’s Places Bronzed Lip-glosses; they are my go to everyday shades. And finally, I’ll go with Marc Jacob’s fragrance Decadence, the original version. It’s my signature scent.
Anything else our beauty readers should know about you?
Mostly that if I can do it, they can do it. Glam Hoarder was started with a vision and $50 of an unemployment check. And just to stay tuned, there are a few things in the works that I am really proud of. I am looking forward to expanding to new product lines outside of accessories and launching branded event in conjunction with my non-profit, The Brown Girls Project.
