Dear Ask Ashlee,
I have been dating my girlfriend for about three years, she is my best friend, I love her with all my heart, and I have been thinking about proposing to her for the last six months. Recently, I reached out to one of her best friends to get her input on an engagement ring. When we spoke, she told me that my girlfriend has been cheating on me with some guy she used to date before me. She said that she has been thinking of telling me for a while and how I am such a good man and don’t deserve the things she’s been doing to me. I wanted to say something to my girl immediately, but she begged me not to say anything because she said she’s the only person that knows and my girl would figure out the information came from here and she didn’t want to risk ruining their friendship. Well, Ash, that was a week ago and since then, she’s reached out to me to check on me and have small talk, and now I feel like I am hiding something from my girlfriend. Plus, I am going crazy not knowing what my girl may or may not be doing. How should I handle this?
So, here’s the thing, you are hiding something from your girlfriend and her friend is not your priority, your relationship and commitment to your girlfriend is. When her friend decided to share this “news” with you, it became very unlikely that she was actually her “best friend” and to be honest, it was more likely a clear indication that this “friend” of hers probably has some underlying crush on you or worse, a sense of jealousy towards what you and your girlfriend share. Again, whatever it is, is not your problem. If you believe that there is validity in what she shared with you, then get to the bottom of it and have a talk with your potential Mrs. This isn’t a time to beat around the bush or engage in 21 questions. If you want to share a life with this woman, it’s best you figure out where you two truly stand now.
As far as the “best friend” is concerned, her recent new activity of checking in on you, is totally inappropriate and her motive sounds questionable. Don’t fall victim to whatever comes next with this one. I hope this helps!
Love & Light,
