The Black & White Cancer Survivors Foundation (BWCSF) recently received the highest award at the Cancer Family Care’s 22nd Joslin Haggart Yeiser Unsung Hero Awards Dinner at the Cintas Center. Dr. Keith Melvin and Mr. Bill Mabrey were presented with the Pauline Cohen Founder’s Award.
This award is named after the founder of Cancer Family Care. Its purpose is to recognize an individual or organization who takes a small idea and turns it into something big. BWCSF is honored to receive such an award, Dr. Melvin said.
BWCSF was co-founded by Dr. Keith Melvin and Bill Mabrey 14 years ago. The two were sharing their individual experiences at a party that Bill was hosting for his wife, Debra, who by then was in remission for almost two years after her diagnosis and treatment. At this party, the two decided to make it an annual “celebration of life” event for community cancer survivors, their families, friends and the business community. This party, which started out with approximately 100 attendees, is now known as the Black & White Cancer Survivors Gala, and hosts approximately 1,100+ attendees.
BWCSF is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise cancer awareness, to educate, encourage early cancer screening to promote the benefits of preventive healthcare and maintenance, to provide support to local cancer-focused organizations for continued research and support services to the community, and to celebrate cancer survivors.
Save the date for the 14th Annual Black & White Cancer Survivors Gala to be held on November 2, 2024, at the Sharonville Convention Center.
