Vonn Bell has made the circle in the NFL. He is a 29-year-old veteran who has had many ups and a few downs in his time in the NFL and even before. Currently in his second stint with the Bengals, Vonn Bell is hoping to recapture the magic he assisted with in 2021 and 2022 in Cincinnati to help the Bengals get back to the top of the conference and beyond. Thus far in 2024, it has not been easy. The Bengals have largely underachieved. Nobody saw a 1-4 start with a team that had most of the key players en route to back-to-back championships.
It was no secret that the Bengal safety would be a star from the beginning. In high school, Bell was rated a 5 star athlete. Having his pick of colleges, he set his sights on Ohio State where he dazzled at the historic university. When draft day came the Ohio State standout would hear his name called in the second round by the New Orleans Saints. For four seasons Bell played a solid roll at safety for New Orleans.
It was in 2020 when the Bengals were in need of a safety the Bengals came calling in the free agent roller coaster. The Bengal safety signed a 3-year, $18 million deal wit the Bengals. It would be Bell’s second season in Cincy that he would make a big impact.
Possible one of the biggest plays in Bengal history was made by Bell. In the 2022 AFC championship, the former Ohio State product would intercept a Patrick Mahomes’ pass in overtime to set up the winning field goal for the Bengals. Seemingly overnight, Bell became a rock star. Though Cincy would fall short in the Super Bowl, Bell put himself in the spotlight with his play.
After Bells 3 years in Cincinnati, the safety was looking to capitalize with a big free agent payday. The Carolina Panthers would come calling with a 3-year, $22 million deal. Unfortunately for Bell, it didn’t work out in Carolina. After only one season Bell, would be released by the Panthers. Luckily for the 2022 championship star, the Bengals were in the market for a safety. Cincy would come calling again for Bell’s services. This time it was just on a temporary “prove it” basis. He is currently playing on a 1-year deal.
The 2024 season has been a nightmare. Von Bell and the Bengal defense have largely underachieved in the teams four losses. This past weekend the team had a devastating 41-38 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Bengal quarterback Joe Burrow said it best. “We aren’t a championship level team right now.”
For Bell and the defense there is time to turn it around. Bell is under a 1-year contract. His future in Cincy may be determined with the success or failure of this season.
